This was a recent find that was made in an antique shop. The obverse appeared Fine to me, and the reverse AG; this, what with even wear having evenly permeated the reverse lettering. The planchet is free from environmental damage that often plagues early coppers. There are no marks or other detractors apparent. The natural, steel blue toning made taking better pics somewhat difficult for this novice photographer.

I had no idea that this was such a rare variety when purchased. Not being much of a student of the Sheldon varieties, I was able to peg this one with the help of auction archive pics that were found online. Initially, I simply thought it to be a respectable looking coin for an early copper. My attribution was subsequently confirmed by a few knowledgeable dealers.

As something of a postscript, I found a 1797 NC-2 a few years ago in a Florida flea market. It had a decent appearance, too, but it wasn't the quality of this 1796. In the same manner, I was able to confirm the Sheldon variety of the 1797. Needless to say, these early coppers can still be found in places that are off the beaten path for most of us collectors.
