1799 Large Cent, an NGC misattribution
I'm sure this goes without saying, especially for the educated people of EAC, but definitely exercise caution when purchasing a low grade 1799 Cent in a slab. Here is an example I recently found listed in a dealer's online inventory for almost $4K...
Pretty obviously a 1798 S-166. Not sure if this was an actual misattribution or just a typo, but it's still a bit disconcerting to see this kind of oversight on a high value coin.
P.S. I did contact the dealer and inform them of the mistake and asked that the coin be taken down.
Very interesting...NGC describes the damage as an "altered date." ???

That is disgraceful that an altered date just gets a "damaged" on it.
Damaged to me means its real but has a major flaw (which I would buy in an instant for a rare variety at a good price I could afford)
whereas an altered date is garbage and even less desirable than a pure counterfeit
So if I take 10 cull undated Liberty Caps and carve 1793 in them - I can get 10 certified 1793 Liberty cap damaged coins?? Wonder if I carve a bisecting crack, maybe I can get a "damaged" S14 out of it?
Hahaha..actually it seems in this case, all you have to do is send in a 1794 Cap, list it as an altered date and NGC will grade it as a 1793 Cap with "damage." Really bad...

Should say 1798 Altered Date, the date 1799 shouldn't appear anywhere on it. At the least it should be 1798 damaged! I bet somebody made a few bucks on that slab somewhere along the way, is there a way to find out when it was slabbed?
Interestingly enough, when you go into NGC's web page and do a cert verification it shows these images along with a description of "Grade: ALTERED DATE", although there is no mention of that on the holder!
