So, I have a pretty decent collection of early dates, but only a couple of '94s. I've tried
with Breen's book and a few others to learn to identify the different head styles with not
much luck. Someone made a suggestion whilst I was up in Buffalo, but I can't remember
the title. Could one of you Boyz make a suggestion for me?

I would say just get pictures of each head and look at them. I think I read somewhere to use the same part of your brain that you would recognize a face with. Don't look at specific details, like hair, nose, etc, just look to recognize them. Don't know if that helps
To me, the head of 93 looks a lot different, almost like she is a little chubby and younger. For the other two heads, another basic characteristic I look for is the distance from LIBERTY to the hair, on most of the head of 94's it's further away, on the head of 95s it closer.

The 1794 book that Al Boka does is very good for learning the different 1794 large cents. The book is cheap at $25. The link to his site is

I looked at Al's page today. He has tons of beautiful photos, but I can't discern when one head changes to the next. They all seem a bit different, even in the same class. I'm assuming that once they change from say, head of 93, it stays there until the next change. Hopefully they don't double back and use another head of 94 after they've used head of 95, as an example. I'm ordering his book, and you're right, it's very inexpensive compared to Breen's or Wright's CENT book. Not sure if I'll ever make it into the Boyz of '94 or not!! clorox
So, you guys, this has been pretty helpful. I've been using Al's site to really help me along, plus I ordered his book, ....and as Beef 1020 said, the first really big clue is how far LIBERTY is from the head.
I think this is why I love this club so much....everyone is so helpful and tons of really knowledgeable people. Maybe I'll get the swing of '94s after all....thanks you guys.....clorox
I think we all have the same disease and none of us want to be cured. I went to the coin show in Arcadia California today. I found two nice coins for my Dansco date/redbook collection. A good 1813 without problems and a 1838 in true 45. It may have been cleaned a 100 years ago, but it makes me very happy. Long Beach coming up soon. I need a 1846 tall date. Not easy for me to find...Also, the disease has taken a turn for the worse. I was looking at 1/2 cents...............Steve

Don't worry about Head of ----, it's not a very precise description, and, for the life of me, I've never figured out what causes PCGS to assign one date bust or the other to any particular coin. To me, the only heads of '93 are S17-20, yes a little chubbier, lets say more rounded bust, with a tiny hook at the lower back of the hair. The only true head of '95 is the S72, with no hook or loop beneath the bust, just a point (like the varieties of 1795). Now certain of the later busts (S66-S71), have a more angular face, flatter cheek; these have also been called the (sorta look like) head of '95. And I have seen several of the other varieties called head of '95 by PCGS. It's better just to avoid such an imprecise description. If it isn't the head of 1793 or 1795 by the precise definition, it must be a head of 1794, and there are many such heads.
