Help with an 1851
Hi guys. Not being a late date collector I'm working without the benefit of Bob's attribution guide. I have a sad looking 1851 large cent that suffers from improper storage in a leather change purse since at least the early '70's. Probably a technical F15 but for the dark corrosion.
The only varieties I could definitely rule out are the 1851 over inverted. There is one glaring diagnostic however, a thin die crack from just southeast of the eye traveling diagonally to the right through the lower curls.
I can't get a photo decent enough with my current setup.
The crack you mention does not match any varieties I know of, it may be a scratch. If you can get pictures I will take a look.
Also the Die Variety for the 1851 Over Date(N-3) in Die State c, the Overdate is gone so you can not rule it out. It will be easier to check the diagnostics if you have a stereo microscope with strong magnification!!!
Take it easy.....Leo
