Thread: Question about how to store large cents

Question about how to store large cents

I forgot to ask around about this at the convention.

What is the best way to store copper coins? Does keeping them in the vinyl flips like the coins in the auction risk anything long term of the coins?

Any opinions will be greatly appreciated,
    Earl Sweeney

Earl - first glad to meet you - I use acid free envelopes and cotton inserts, both obtainable from Rod Burress. I also use Blue Ribbon to protect them.

    OK, here it is

    Wed
Left Cincy early AM and headed for Buffalo and arrived early PM and checked into hotel. Wed Pm ran into many members arriving including mhy friend Walt from Grand Junction, CO who was all bandaged up from melanoma on his arm - nothing stops the copper guys.

    Thurs
Up early for morning exercise and then attended the grading and counterfeit seminar which is always informative as Doug and Steve manage to drag out different problem coins each year. After a quick lunch I began setup of my display of 1816 dies states of which I need 5 of the 31. After getting setup in better time than anticipated I hit the bourse while everyone was setting up and BSing. At CVM I was slightly astonished to find two that I needed (LDS N4 and EDS N9). I licked my chops and had Chris set them back as had forgotten to get checks from wife. By then it was time to get ready for the reception which turned out to be well-attended and reasonably decent food for a buffet. After that was The Happenings and there were some great coins on display.

    Fri
Up from 3-mile walk and then breakfast - I got mine timely other guys did not -hotel service was frankly crappy as understaffed. First I checked on exhibit which needed some minor adjustments and then back to the bourse. I found an N3 at Tom Reynolds table that I can switch around to get the die states as I need them. By then it was time for the educational seminars which were quite informative and well-done. After that we decided to eat at hotel as wife took the museum tour which was an all-day affair and she was bushed. We ate with my buddy Walt and had a nice dinner and then some drinks at the bar with other EACers.

    Sat
Another workout breakfast, etc. I thought that I was done at the bourse but upon passing Rod Widok's table noticed an 1816 N9 that i had missed - wow a State II - now I had 3 ot the five I needed. Budget was now blasted so headed for the educational forums. Again, excellent presentations - one by Mark Borchardt was an enjoyable, interactive exercise trying to figure out which coin or person he was - kind a a "What's My Line" format. We then headed out for
dinner with the wife and got back for the auction.. I did not buy and prices seemed to be all over the place but I had not really looked at the coins in detail.
The auction was quite successful with well over 300k in bids.

    Sun
NO exercise , breakfast and the EAC annual meeting. Right after that I had to tear down exhibit and head for Lake George for RnR - now firmly ensconced at The Sagamore.

Overall a great time, saw many friends, and plugged more holes that anticipated. The bourse was quite large but it seemed well-attended and heard kind of mixed comments. CRO Road Report covered that end better than I as I was quite focused on my needs and forums.

If the flips are indeed vinyl and not something containing pvc, that should be ok. I store all mine in Dansco albums. I buy a blank folder and buy large cent sized insert pages for them as I need them.

I stored most of my large cents in a Whitman or Dansco album for many years (like about 30) until I started acquiring varieties that did not have hole to plug. I kept these special varieties in the same paper 2x2 envelopes that I received them in, or in a few cases the plastic certified slabs that I received them in. Every once in a while, I received a newly purchased large cent in a nicely identified 2x2 envelope with a cotton liner inside. As years passed by, there is no question in my mind that my large cent treasures stored in cotton liners in paper envelopes maintained their appearance and luster nearly perfectly compared to any of the other options. The Whitman and Dansco folders allowed the slides to slightly scuff the surface of many of my large cents, and the manila paper envelopes did appear to tone some of the large cents on the edges. My few large cents in certified slabs all seemed to attract very slight green "crud" in the devices that when noticed by me and removed from the slab, it could be removed with acetone. Every single one of my large cents are now kept in cotton liners inside 2x2 paper envelopes. Contact Rod Burress to get them. Just my personal large cent's opinion !

Where is a good place to get the cotton liners? Would any of the dealers at the upcoming Long Beach show have them?

    Hi fagaly
I make cotton liners for all of my large cent and all so make them for resale also. If you like, check out my post here on Buy,Sell,Trade.

I agree with Dennis CD. Slabs take too much space. Plastics leave a rosy residue on the coins. Store your best coins in cotton pockets to protect any terrific toning. Put these in paper envelopes. Store the ones that need some retoning in the 2x2 paper envelopes that are not acid-free. A few years later when you can't remember why it has no cotton pocket, give it one. Cotton pockets used to be a good recommendation for any coin worth a hundred or so bucks as they only cost perhaps a quarter. Now many of those left out are worth 200 bucks!
