What was this coin colored/toned with?
I don't usually buy middle date coins, but I found a really nice 1820 N-5 (I think) in what I'd guess by EAC standards is VF30, if not better. Under a 10X hand lens it apparent that it's been recolored (a very good job too) with some compound that appears the color of cordovan or dark brown shoe polish.......that's the color of it, I'm sure it's not shoe polish! Just curious if anyone knows what it might be colored with. Should I try to remove it or just let it be? It's a pretty decent looking coin.....thanks......clorox

OK -I'd love to help and my browser has been wonky on and off today - but I see no visual ref at the moment.

Ponyseeker,
I didn't post a picture. Thought someone might know what common agent is used to recolor copper. sorry.........scott

Recoloring certainly may be needed under certain circumstances --- but it is definitely not for the uninitiated or for the weak of heart. I have seen grown men cry. Seriously !! --- Chuck

I think it's the only recolored coin I own.
It was in such beautiful shape and the price was right.....I just couldn't resist.
Don't think I'd ever want to try it myself, but someone did a
pretty good job........thanks you guys......scott
