    Disney Comix Avatars

    Hi all.

Nothing to do with early coppers, but I notice that several of our members use photos of Uncle $crooge comic books as their avatar. Just wondered if any of you are collecting them.

If so, you might be interested in my collection, which is being sold by Heritage through a series of auctions, mostly on line. There's a complete run from 1940-1980 of the W D Comicis & Stores. (#1-14 were sold recently, the rest are still to come). Also a complete set of Uncle $crooge, D Duck, etc etc

Would love to see some of them go to a good home with one of my fellow EAC'ers.

    Hi Wayne -

I've pondered getting a good Scrooge avatar going, but simply haven't gotten around to it. Maybe I'll take a look at your upcoming items and swipe an image

On other questions - are you the Wayne Phillips of SC Coin and Stamp in Arcadia along with Cy many moons ago? If so - we have met a loooong time back. A friend of mine and I did some work for Cy as teens back in the later part of the 70's.

    Hi Kirk.

Yes, that's me. Cy passed away in 2001. He ran SC Coin & Stamp in Arcadia from 1974 until his death, and I worked with him during the bullion boom of the early 1980's. Before and after that, I've been a specialist in ancient coins. I published 349 price lists and 57 mail bid sales between 1967 and 2008, but gave up the hard copy advertising due to ever increasing printing and postage costs. Nowadays I have an "e-store" at www.vcoins.com with about 3000 ancient coins for sale.

You are welcome to use one of the images from the Heritage auction for your avatar, as long as they don't mind.

    All the best!

    Wayne!

Good to hear from you! Sorry to hear of Cy's passing. Are you still local to the area? I can't recall if I ever met you in the earlier years of SC when it was over off of 1st Ave. I seem to only recall having met you when on Duarte Rd.

A friend and I did some "research" and mailing work for Cy back in the mid-70's. We went to the library and harvested antique dealers from phone books that covered the state so he could do a mailing, I still have some of the coins in my type book that I traded for rather than getting paid. I had no clue until your previous message that we had gotten in so early in his business. I wish that I had stuck to numismatics at that point and not being on the "returning" end of it all at this point. Better late than never!

Thanks for the link. Looks interesting! I have an interest in ancients, but simply no skills at identification or anything else. I did get to go to the reception that Heritage put on for the Shoshana Collection and that was fabulous. Makes me wish I knew what I was doing! I just buy the occasional item that strikes my eye most of the time, or something that I know nothing about on a local bid board that just seems too cheap.

What is your particular store on the Vcoin site? I'd have loved to have tried to grab table scraps (if there were any to be had), from the Shoshana Collection, but a wee bit of bother on the local front precluded me from even bidding online. I'll likely touch base with you via PM on some other ancients questions that I have.

    Cheers! Kirk Thomas
