Last March I went to a show that had been cleaned out of collectible old coppers. Many dealers said someone had bought all of their nice large cents from them the day before on early bird day. I found in a junk bag one that saved the show from being a total wreck for me. I paid for it ten bucks and a tank of gas.

Here is my consolation prize--the worst coin in my collection at my bank, and R8 quiz 128: What is the last year of cents with this star size? What is the last year of cents with this date size? What is this variety? In what order did these cuds develop on the die for this terminal die state piece? I found no appearances of this die state in any auctions--it's not even in the older edition of Grellman's book of late dates. How many of this state are listed in RFL's late date cud census appearing in Common Cents 3/11, the listing of EAC late date collections? Next week you'll see my nicest cent! Hugh Bodell

Anybody want to help me grade this one? It's sharp with heavy, even corrosion and a nasty rim bump and has a couple of recent scrapes leaving bare copper showing.

Hugh,

I have two unattributed late dates,1847 and 1851, with very similar corrosion. These two spent 30 or 40 years in a small leather change purse and I've always assumed the corrosion was a result of the leather storage. By any chance did your coin have a similar storage life?

127Here's my second state piece with the second cud only showing.

Looks like my first reply didn't go through. That is a good bet about even but heavy corrosion. I found that one in a plastic bag without holders at a coin show. Usually there is enough to look at without going through junk bags.
I have a die state set of 46n14's. Grellman has seen and confirmed the first two. The cud under the date is weak until the 3rd cud die state. The pic above shows the cud at stars 3-4 clearly but weaker than in the hand. The quiz coin shows the cud from above star 10 to above star 11 clearly but of course not as well as when seen in hand.

The quiz coin pic provides a good look at the cud under 18. There is no cud on this coin as bold as the rim damage at star 13, which shows through on the reverse. No other rim damage to note!

I finally got this one out of the bank and to my office scanner. Here's three more looks at those cuds, each from a differently rotated pic.150151152
