View Full Version : Trying to understand EAC Grading

I am still trying to understand EAC grading. I am enclosing photos of a coin which has some nicks on the Obverse and wondering how many points would be deducted for them. Any estimates on how this coin would grade?

Just my opinion, but I would call it 25 net 20 for the nicks. I tend to deduct less for nicks on lower grade coins then I would on a higher grade coin. Those nicks on a 50 or 45 coin may be worth 10 points while on a 25 or 20 coin only 5.
Not sure if you've seen it yet, but Gary Hahn has a nice late date grading section on his website: http://www.early-copper.com/grading.html

When it comes to "Sharpness Grading" you will find that more people will agree with you on the determination of the Grade. But when it comes to "Net Grading" this is where everyone's subjective opinion comes into play. Yes, I know we should agree but in the real world that just does not occur because being that we are all individuals "Distractions on a coin's surface" affect everyone's opinion differently with the end result...different opinions on " Net Grade". In reality it doesn't matter what grade a coin is viewed at...all that matters between a 'Buyer' and a 'Seller' is the price they agree upon and a 'Sale/Transaction' is made!!!
Take it easy.....Leo
