I've seen a few on e-bay in the last few months like that. 1804's that the date has been practically worn or scratched off except a little piece of the 4, so the ad says it has to be an 1804. Problem is the reverse won't be right - it looks like it may be right if you don't know large cents and that there is only 1 reverse. I've also seen this with a couple 1799s

Being a collector, and it sure does not matter what you collect, it's always prudent and wise to do your homework first before you buy. Purchase the reference books so you are armed with the proper knowledge and buy from reputable dealers until you can gain experience and learn to attribute copper coins on your own. It's always been buyer beware and that's why I stay away from the Internet and especially Ebay!!!

Can't stress enough what Leo said above...if you're a newbie, buy the books! It's crushing to spend lots of money on coins you are really proud of only to find out that you got skinned by a scammer. I bought a 1780 Maria Theresa Thaler in New Orleans when I was 12 years old. I was so excited because it was the oldest thing in my collection at the time. Then I found out that those Thalers had been minted with the 1780 date all the way up to the present. And believe me, the dealer I bought it from was NOT forthcoming with that information!
