View Full Version : Have others received Penny Wise?
10-30-2012, 02:30 PM
The EAC Region 8 newsetter for Sunday 10-21 indicates that the new issue of Penny Wise was mailed on the previous Thursday (10-18). Mine has not arrived as of today (10-30).
Just wondered whether others have received their copy by now?

"Ask and ye shall receive" (or is it Murphy's Law?) I put off posting my question about Penny Wise for two or three days, and each day I said to myself "if it doesn't come tomorrow, I'll ask the members at Copper Notes." Yesterday I got impatient enought to finally put my question up on Copper Notes, so naturally my copy arrived this morning. Thanks to those who replied!

Just to explain how the mailing works and why we do it this way. First, the Board voted to go back to third-class (non-profit) mailing in an effort (successful) to keep from having to raise the dues. The way third-class mailing works is that our printer takes the issues to a shipper who sorts them and then takes them to the post office. This takes a few days. The post office does not give third-class mail the same attention as it gives first-class mail, which is why it costs far less to mail, and there has been a lot of election-related literature clogging up the post office in recent weeks, so the mails have probably been slower than usual. Nevertheless, nearly everyone should have gotten his/her issue by this time.

Of course, I'm a new member this month so maybe I haven't floated up from the bottom of the barrel yet, LOL.

The best things in life are worth the wait .....

It was worth the wait, I just wish I had more items like this in my mailbox (and fewer pieces of election related garbage).

NYC area mail was likely washed out to sea. How long should we wait before requesting a replacement?
11-05-2012, 01:47 AM
I didn't hear that any postal worker, sleeping on a bag of P-W's, was washed out to sea. I don't have mine in CA, either, Craig. Be patient.
11-07-2012, 12:53 PM
It came last week.
11-15-2012, 07:16 AM
It is now November 15 and still no PW. Did you get yours Dan?
11-15-2012, 06:01 PM
Still looking for mine as well. Who would we call?
11-15-2012, 06:27 PM
Yes, Craig, it floated in on Tuesday, now if only my lots from Fred Lake's book sale, mailed in September, would get here. But I'm sure those are media mail, the only class of mail lower than what P-W uses. I just wish people would think and remember that what they pay for membership, $39, is less than they have to pay for any decent copper. Do we really have to keep dues that low? I now pay $175/mo. for cable and phone, $50/mo. for water, and three bucks and change for P-W.

Should I continue to be patient or should I ask Chuck to mail me another one now.
11-17-2012, 06:44 PM
Ask Chuck to send you a new one. There were some available to pick up at the EAC meeting in Baltimore today.

I just received my PW yesterday, 11/17. I live in NYC.
I cannot believe that a two tiered system of first class mail, with a corresponding increase in dues and the present third class mailing, is difficult to institute. Prior posts said that it was too difficult to handle two mailing lists. Please!!!! We are in the 21st century, innovative technology and all that. I don't know who does the mailing, or if the labels are just given to the printer, whatever, come on do some research and get a two tier mailing system implemented. That's your job, even if you just volunteered for it. Step up to the plate.
11-18-2012, 11:02 AM
Could one of you guys tell us newbees who Chuck is so we can get ours too?
11-19-2012, 08:08 AM
Chuck Heck is our treasurer.
11-19-2012, 09:47 AM
I have to disagree. This is an 'all volunteer' organization. The 'job' is what the volunteer decides it is. No where in our constitution is there a requirement for a two tier mailing system. You could be treasurer if you stepped up to the plate and ran for office and you could implement the system you envision.

I asked Chuck for a replacement PW and here is what he said:
Hi Craig -- replacements are handled by Rod Burress -- he gets all the extra copies
mailed to him.
If you need a quick fix the issue is available at the Members Only section at the
Happy Thanksgiving --- Chuck
So -FYI to others in region 2 who did not get their PW: Rod Burress is our membership chairman. He does not use email. Correspond with him via the post office. His mailing address is:
Cincinnati OH 45215

I understand that this, along with most all collectibles groups has positions that are staffed with volunteers. I would not volunteer for a position I couldn't dedicated a decent amount of time to. That is why I am not an officer in EAC or any other organization I am a member of at this time. If I was an officer, I would definitely listen to my membership and try to facilitate a way to accomplish a reasonable request. The job is not what the volunteer dictates it should be, I hope we do not have volunteer dictators. The job is spelled out in the by laws and therefore is not up ti interpretation. Officers, however should be understanding of members wants and if they need to adjust their "volunteering" protocol, then that officer should. It is truly the downward spiraling organization that doesn't respond to it's members needs.

Today I have received my October issue of PW.

First of all everyone needs to remember that the members running the club do it on a volunteer basis and are doing their best. Also remember we all have lives outside of the copper collecting community and sometimes personal matters need to be taken care of(our lives are more of a priority then catering to every members wishes...some of us have families and jobs)before we can do our volunteering. The Penny-Wise publication is now sent out third class(I believe)instead of first class to save money to our membership...so remember not everyone has 'deep pockets' and can afford 'Next Day Air'...note: sarcasm!!!
It sure seems like certain 'individual(s)' do a lot of complaining about how the club is run but they themselves can not offer their own time by volunteering(for the good of the club)for a position to implement and effect changes.....I have noticed that in all clubs or organizations I have joined through the years that only a small group of individuals volunteer to do all the work...so the rest can sit on their hands, complain about how the club is run and be entertained. My suggestion is for those of you that are not happy with how the club is operated...is to come up with viable suggestions of how the club can be improved and then talk to the officers and give them your suggestions, ideas and input so the board can implement said ideas which will then benefit the whole membership.....
Remember.....we are still one of the best organizations/clubs out there and there is a reason why we have a large membership. I know we all do not have a lot of time/can volunteer for positions but instead of spending your time complaining and being negative.....come up with viable solutions so we can become even a better, stronger organization which attracts more individuals who want to be a part of our experience and sharing of knowledge!!!
Take it easy.....Leo
