I don't get this one, it was described accuratly, for the most part, yet this sledge hammer job got a lot of attention.

Yes I know. I saw it when it was first listed. I knew it was not real just by looking at with out reading what was stated. I just passed it by. I should have watch is. Boy some payed good money for poor coin made into junk. I have a bunch of low grade damage large cent. So if I take some and smash them together I can make a lot of money. The only thing is I would not have the heart to do that.

Hay! Did you see the bad 1857 large cent selling on ebay.

10-26-2012, 11:34 AM

I think that there's always someone out there who will buy something that
they think is rare or unusual, hoping to turn it at a later date for a big profit.
10-26-2012, 11:48 PM
That is the one I thought you were talking about. Being newer to large cents I seem to question a handful of coins that are on ebay at any one time.
I picked up a 57 large date that was graded just because of this issue, now I just need to do the same with a small date.
I would appreciate anyone who posts fakes here (explaining what makes them clearly fake would be appreciated as well).

Knowing almost nothing about late dates (other than having one of each date), I couldn't figure out how that coin would be fake.
What gives that coin away?
10-27-2012, 11:36 AM
That '57 looks good to me, what's wrong with it?
10-27-2012, 01:38 PM
I don't know anything about late dates, but it looks like the date is really askew compared
to the others I've seen, but then again, it could be because it's a specific die. Any help out there?

I checked the Grellman book, this one doesn't match the date possition known for N1 (the large date '57) Note the 1 punches into the bust, 8 is too far left and the 5 is the wrong shape. Good eyes, Charles !

Looks like the date is really skewed, but that might be one particular die....I'm definitely not a
late date guy. Several of the others don't seem to have that down-sloping date. Any help
from some late date guy?

There is anther bad 1857 large cent large date, up on ebay right now it have 4 days left on it. Can you find it and what the most out standing thing on this one that give it away as a fake. This should be a easy one to find.
