View Full Version : New 1798 for my date set

I have a choice between three 1798s to put in my book. One has fire damage I think and it is out. One has interesting detail, but has been cleaned and needs to go to the recolor man. The other is nice, but in poor condition. Which one should I put in my book? Any help would be great..........Steven

I am working on the picture process. That is a GAR medal that I am listing on eBay today.

Without worrying about shelton number and only look of coin for date set, I would pick the one on pictures 1-3.

The first three coins (same coin) I think is a S181 which is a R3. I do not know what the others are. I am more interested in the quality of the coin than the rarity. I still like the cleaned on best.

It's always wise advice to buy the best quality you can and buy ones that have nice surfaces and without bag marks, pitting, corrosion and other defects. As for whether a coin has been cleaned or not...I usually go by the rule that most Early Copper have been cleaned at one point or another and as long as it was early on and has been toning back than I would worry. Now if you are talking about high grade AU's and Uncirculated Coins then I would stay away from coins that have been tampered with!!!
Take it easy.....Leo
