Did any one see the counterfeit 1823 N-2 up for sale on ebay yesterday. I told him about it, and maybe others did also. I see he took it down. I hope he's not stuck with it. It's always great for every one to have good reference books before buying or selling.

was the "8" high, indicating it was really an 1828?

Then number is 130726180723 . I looked, and the 8's not high. I did not if came from any other large cent date. At the time when I first saw it, I just took it for chinese junk.

It's a Chinese fake, the mother coin was an 1833N5 with a rim ding over the D of UNITED. These are easy to spot once you know what was copied to make the dies. Most of these middle date counterfiets match the attribution points of the 33/5 including the die cracks of a MDS example. The most dangerous of the group is the 1833, it passes the die attribution test for N5 including the "horned 8" but the rim and edge is still wrong.

Besides good old knowledge, another good tool to fight this is to have
good databases of all known rare US coins, so that when one comes out
of the woodwork, red flags go off!! And obviously, another good questions is
"where did you get this"?
"Oh, I found it in grandpa's attic in a junk drawer"
