View Full Version : Bottles of Coin Care

Is there any difference between the old Coin Care and the newer red label bottles? Do you (all of you) still use Coin Care. I have some and it seems to make copper coin look better. Is it "good" for the coppers? I would be thankful for any advise.

Love to hear more about this myself!

I have used the old coin care for 30 years. It has always worked great for me. I still have a bottle and a half. It's like gold out there to get, it will run you $45 to $60 or so to get a bottle. I don't know any thing about the red label. I would like to hear about it myself.

I think the old stuff had carbon tetrachloride in it, which has been made unavailable by the eco-nuts, due
to concerns about CFCs, the ozone layer, and global warming.

The old stuff (w/gold label) had 1-1-1 (trichloroethane) in it. 1-1-1 was used back in the early 80's as a degreaser for PCB's, etc. in electronic manufacturing plants. As the government increased efforts to reduce ozone depletion, they initially declared it limited use and you had to report your usuage quarterly, then they banned it completely. Attempts to formulate a new CARE were unsucessful supposedly because no one had the formula or could duplicate it. I am unaware about the red label material but there was a period when some "CARE" was made and it came in a small plastic bottle. That item didn't do as well as Blue Ribbon for cleaning or preservation. I have never advocated using CARE (any version) or Blue Ribbon on mint state coins. But coins that had been circulated definitely looked better with its use. Basically a cleaner/preservation material.

Pretty sure the new coin care is just a light oil. Works good on dirt and some corrosion. Lets see, we were gonna die due to a new ice age, then due to rain forest depletion, then ozone layer depletion, then CO2 in the atmosphere. These people need to get a life!!!!, and quit trying to control ours!!! PS the morons at the EPA have declared the air you breath out (CO2) a dangerous pollutent!!
